Student life

Living in Tirana as a medical student

This programme is a joint diploma between Our Lady of Good Counsel and the University of Rome 'Tor Vergata', taught in Tirana by Tor Vergata's own lecturers, with clinical rotations split between the Catholic Hospital 'Our Lady of Good Counsel' in Tirana and the Tor Vergata Polyclinic in Rome.

The university states the degree is fully recognised by the Italian Ministry of Education and, by extension, the European Union.

Candidates who pass the university's own selection go on to the same IMAT exam used across Italy's English-taught Medicine programmes, competing for a growing number of places: 320 for the 2026/2027 cycle, up from 150 the year before, all reserved for non-EU candidates resident abroad.

FAQ

Our Lady of Good Counsel admissions FAQ

Yes. The Medicine and Surgery programme in Tirana is taught in English, and both admission stages are in English too: the university's own written test in the sciences and logic, and the IMAT that follows it. The 2026/2027 call asks for English at B2 rather than scoring a separate English paper.

Not confirmed either way on the university's own test. A −0.25 penalty for wrong answers circulates widely, but the official Call doesn't publish a marking scheme, so treat any guessing strategy you read as an estimate, not a university rule. The IMAT, the second stage, has its own published rules.

Its structure is unusual precisely because of this. Albania itself is an EU candidate country, not a member, so a standalone Albanian medical degree wouldn't get automatic EU recognition. But this specific programme is run as a joint diploma with the University of Rome Tor Vergata, an Italian public university, and the school describes it as valid in Albania, Italy and EU countries on that basis. This arrangement was legally challenged in Italy and upheld on appeal, so it's been tested, not merely advertised. Still, confirm the current recognition status directly with both institutions before relying on it for your specific plans.

Both, one after the other. The university's own written test comes first; its 2026/2027 call covers Albanian, other non-EU and specified Kosovo applicants, and those who pass it then register on Universitaly to sit the IMAT (the same centralised exam used for English-taught Medicine across Italy) for the places allocated to this Tirana campus. How the two results combine isn't stated. Italian and EU applicants aren't covered by that call, and whether they can enter at Tirana, and how, isn't verified, so ask the university before you prepare.

Yes, it's the 2027 edition, built from the latest admission rules Our Lady of Good Counsel has published. Where a 2027 date or detail isn't published yet, confirm it with the university before you rely on it.
