Student life
Living in Sofia as a medical student
Medical University of Sofia — not to be confused with the separate Sofia University 'St. Kliment Ohridski', which runs its own much smaller Faculty of Medicine — is Bulgaria's flagship medical school, based in the capital.
Sofia is compact, green and ringed by the Vitosha mountains, with a growing food scene and an expat community that has roughly doubled since 2022. Clinical training spans multiple hospitals across the city.
FAQ
Medical University of Sofia admissions FAQ
Yes. Medical University of Sofia delivers Medicine in English and runs its admission process in the same language.
It depends on the school and the cycle. Several universities (Varna, Zlatarov, and Pleven in recent cycles) run the exam fully online and remotely proctored; Sofia University's programme page does not say where its exam is sat. Check the current cycle's format for your target school; this guide notes it where published.
At some schools, yes. Medical University of Sofia's combined exam includes an English component, and Medical University of Varna runs a separate language-competency test alongside its two science papers. Medical University of Plovdiv and Prof. Dr. Assen Zlatarov University set an English diagnostic test only for candidates who don't already hold an accepted English certificate. Not every Bulgarian school tests English at all.
No separate national board exam. Bulgaria's state exam is built into the final year of the six-year degree itself. Afterwards, registering in the National Register of the Bulgarian Medical Association (BLS) is free and, once granted, indefinite. EU/EEA/Swiss nationals need a professional-qualification-recognition certificate from Bulgaria's Ministry of Health as part of that registration.
Yes, it's the 2027 edition, built from the latest admission rules Medical University of Sofia has published. Where a 2027 date or detail isn't published yet, confirm it with the university before you rely on it.
