What Medicine at LUM costs
LUM is a private university, and Medicine is its most expensive degree after Dentistry. The 2026/27 call sets a single yearly contribution (contributo unico) of €16,500, paid in three instalments, plus the Puglia regional tax for the right to study. These are the 2026/27 figures; the 2027/28 call is not out yet.
Medicine and Surgery at LUM: fees in the 2026/27 call
| Fee | Amount | When |
|---|---|---|
| Admission test | €200 per test | When you register for each test day; not refunded |
| First instalment | €8,500 | On enrolment: by 13:00 on 15 April 2026 for those admitted in the ranking, or by the deadline of the scorrimento notice |
| Second instalment | €4,000 | By 8 September 2026 |
| Third instalment | €4,000 | By 6 November 2026 |
| Total contribution | €16,500 a year | Updated each year by ISTAT tables, by at most 3% |
| Regional tax for the right to study | Set by the Puglia Region | On enrolment |
| Revenue stamps | €16 each | At pre-enrolment and at enrolment |
A late instalment costs 5% more, and 10% from the 31st day. LUM's general enrolment page lists Medicine at €15,000 a year, but the call for 2026/27 says €16,500, and the call is the binding text. The first instalment is refunded only if you do not obtain your school-leaving diploma, or if the Ministry cuts LUM's places and your conditional enrolment lapses.
LUM's discounts for a high school-leaving mark are for other departments, not Medicine. From the second year, every department gives 10% off to students with at least 40 credits and an average of 28/30 or more, and winners of an ADISU Puglia scholarship and students with a disability of 66% or more are fully exempt (they pay first and are refunded).
Curriculum
The study plan, year by year
Medicine and Surgery at LUM (LM-41) takes six years, twelve semesters and 360 credits, over 35 integrated exams, and qualifies you as a doctor. The first three years are preclinical, the human body and the mechanisms of disease; the last three are clinical, in the medical and surgical areas and in prevention. Attendance is compulsory, and Erasmus exchanges are available.
Clinical training starts in the second year: 63 credits of traineeship, 15 of them the evaluative traineeship of the fifth and sixth years that counts towards the licence to practise. It takes place at the Ospedale Generale Regionale 'F. Miulli' in Acquaviva delle Fonti, the Mater Dei Hospital in Bari and other accredited facilities in Puglia.
Main exams by year in the 2026/27 study plan (the same for MED_FM and MED_MD)

Places and campus
MED_FM and MED_MD: places, campus and hospitals
LUM admits to two Medicine and Surgery courses through one call. MED_FM is run in partnership with the Ente Ecclesiastico Ospedale Generale Regionale 'F. Miulli', in Acquaviva delle Fonti; MED_MD with the Mater Dei Hospital, in Bari. Their 2026/27 study plans list the same exams; what differs is the partner hospital where you train.
For 2026/27 the call offered 290 places, 140 on MED_FM and 150 on MED_MD, subject to the Ministry's decree. Places have grown fast: 90 in 2021/22, 120 in 2022/23 and 2023/24, 290 since 2024/25. Each course has its own test day and its own ranking, so you can sit for both. In 2026/27 the last places on the first ranking went at 68.9 points out of 90 (MED_MD) and 68.7 (MED_FM), and the waiting lists then moved far down both.
Teaching is on LUM's campus at Casamassima, on the S.S. 100 south of Bari; the admission test itself is sat from home. The call is open to Italian and EU citizens and to non-EU citizens legally resident in Italy, and it asks for English at B1 level, or an OFA cleared through LUM's language centre.

Student life
Living in Bari as a medical student
LUM's campus is in Casamassima, part of the 'Baricentro' complex in the Bari metropolitan area — a much smaller, quieter setting than Rome or Milan, with costs to match: a shared room has been cited around €350/month, well below what either bigger city runs. Clinical training is anchored at the Regional General Hospital 'F.
Miulli' in nearby Acquaviva delle Fonti, now formally designated 'Policlinico Universitario Miulli' under a 2025 agreement between LUM and the Puglia region, giving students access to a substantial combined network of university- and hospital-directed clinical units from the second year. LUM is one of Italy's newer entrants to Medicine (founded 1995 as Libera Università Mediterranea Jean Monnet, renamed for its late rector), so published data on student population and international mix is thinner than at longer-established schools.
FAQ
LUM admissions FAQ
No. LUM's Medicine and Surgery programme is taught in Italian, and the admission test is set in Italian too. This guide and its simulator questions are written in Italian too, so you prepare in the language of the test; confirm the current language requirement directly with LUM before applying.
Remotely, from home, under proctoring, not at the Casamassima campus. It's 60 five-option questions in two sealed sections: 36 Logical Reasoning questions in 60 minutes, then 24 Biology, Chemistry and Physics questions in 40 minutes, and a closed section can't be reopened. A correct answer scores +1.5, a wrong one −0.2 and a blank 0, out of 90, and you need at least 20 points to be eligible.
It's built on LUM's most recent call, for the 2026/27 cycle (Bando D.P. 345/25). The 2027/28 call hadn't been published as of this guide's last update, so check it for any changes once it's out.
Yes. LUM-format practice sessions are available inside the simulator.
LUM's Casamassima campus offered 290 seats for 2026/27: 140 on the MED_FM pathway and 150 on MED_MD, subject to change by the Ministry. Italy's Ministry of University decree for the 2025/2026 cycle listed LUM's quota for non-EU applicants abroad as still 'in accreditation'. If you're applying from outside the EU and not already resident in Italy, confirm your specific route with LUM directly rather than assuming the standard non-EU pathway applies.
As a standard Italian medical degree (LM-41), it's designed to qualify for automatic EU/EEA recognition on the same basis as any other accredited Italian programme, though given the accreditation note above, non-EU applicants should confirm LUM's current status directly. The old separate Esame di Stato licensing exam no longer exists nationally; a practical assessment built into the final year now confers the right to register and practice instead.
