Dates, scoring and admissions
Key dates
- Next application round
- Not yet publishedNot published; the 2026/2027 campaign's calendar was the most recent found, and no later cycle page had appeared as of 11 October 2026. In 2026/2027 documents were accepted from 4 March 2026
- Examination day (2026/2027 campaign)
- Not yet publishedThree online sittings: 30 July, 20 August and 8 September 2026. Each had its own document deadline: online receipt until 28 July, 18 August and 6 September 2026, or in person until 24 July, 14 August and 2 September 2026. An additional round then took documents from 29 September to 2 October 2026 and sat the tests on 6 October 2026
- Test sequence on the day
- Not yet publishedIn the 2026/2027 campaign: Biology 10:00, Chemistry 13:00, English B1 15:00 EEST; confirm your own cycle's timings, which are set per campaign
- English certificate exemption deadline
- Not yet publishedDeadline not yet announced; candidates holding an accepted English certificate never sit the B1 diagnostic, but the cut-off for submitting it is not published
- Enrolment deadline
- Not yet published2027/2028 not yet published; in 2026/2027 enrolment opened after each ranking (6 August, 26 August and 14 September 2026), the last window running 15 September to 2 October 2026, and after the additional round on 8 and 9 October 2026. Non-EU applicants needing a type D visa had to submit a complete document set by 11 September 2026, and the academic year opened on 5 October 2026
How it's scored
- Ranking-score formula
- (3 × Biology grade) + (3 × Chemistry grade) + the grade from your school-leaving diploma in the official language of the country where it was issued
- Maximum ranking score
- 42
- Minimum eligible score
- 24 of 42: below it you do not enter the ranking, regardless of your raw Biology or Chemistry points. Confirmed in the university's admission regulation at the article governing foreign candidates studying in English; a separate minimum of 25 in that article's earlier paragraphs belongs to the domestic Bulgarian-citizen formula and is not this figure
- Relative weight
- Biology and Chemistry count identically at ×3 each; the diploma language grade counts at ×1. The two sciences together account for 36 of the 42 available points
- Biology point ceiling
- 36 points across 31 questions: an average of about 1.16 points per item, and a flat one-point scheme is arithmetically impossible
- Chemistry point ceiling
- 70 points across 30 questions: items worth 1.5, 2.5 or 3.0 by difficulty, an average of about 2.33 points each
- Which Chemistry items carry which weight
- Not yet publishedNot published; the university states the three point values but never says which questions carry them
- Raw-points-to-grade conversion
- Not yet publishedNot published; so a raw Biology or Chemistry total cannot be converted into a predicted ranking score
- Answer options (Biology and Chemistry)
- Not yet publishedNo rule published. The university's sample tests use four options (a to d), but four is stated as the format only for the English test's items 11-50, so no guessing expected value can honestly be computed for the two tests that count
- Incorrect answers (Biology and Chemistry)
- Not yet publishedNo penalty rule is published for either science test. IvyTest works from no penalty as the neutral assumption and flags every conclusion that depends on it
- Incorrect answers (English B1)
- Not penalised; the university states this explicitly for the English test
- English B1 pass mark
- 25 of 50: the only published numeric cut-off anywhere in this admission process, and it contributes nothing to the ranking score
- Per-subject remedial floors
- None: Bulgaria has no counterpart to the Italian additional-learning-requirement (OFA) system, and no minimum raw score is published for Biology or Chemistry
Admissions: Prof. Dr. Assen Zlatarov University
- Degree
- Medicine (English-taught, 6-year); the Faculty of Medicine was established in 2019, and the earliest English-track timetables point to a first intake in 2023/24
- Language of instruction
- English, though the Biology and Chemistry tests may also be sat in Bulgarian
- Campus
- Burgas, Bulgaria's second Black Sea city (all three entrance tests are sat online)
- Tuition
- €10,000 / year, paid as €5,000 per term (marked 'to be confirmed' on the official enrolment page)
- Application fee
- €450: a €300 entry-exam fee covering Biology, Chemistry and the English B1 test, plus a €150 document-processing fee, paid by bank transfer before the exam account is created. In the additional round of autumn 2026, candidates bringing entrance-exam grades from another Bulgarian university paid only the €150
- Entrance exams
- Required: Biology and Chemistry both count towards the ranking; the English B1 diagnostic is a separate pass/fail gate
- English certificate
- Depends: holders of an accepted certificate are exempt from the B1 diagnostic and never sit it
- Interview
- Not required
- Motivation letter
- Not required
- Document requirements
- Legalisation, certified translation and apostille all required
- Bulgarian for clinical years
- Bulgarian language classes run from the first year (they are on the 2026/2027 first-year timetable); no page states from which year clinical work in Bulgarian begins
- Clinical training
- Clinical practicals take place at hospitals in Burgas (the timetables list UMHAT and the Bulgarian Cardiac Institute)
- Student body
- Not yet publishedNot published: no student numbers appear on the university's pages
- Cost of living
- Not published by the university; as an IvyTest estimate, budget €500–800 / month
- Seats available
- Not yet publishedNo seat count is published for the English-taught programme
- Application process
- Direct application through the university: scanned documents are uploaded at st.uniburgas.bg (not the retired btu.bg address); no interview, and an accepted English certificate exempts a candidate from the B1 diagnostic. The university states that it has no authorised recruitment agents

Questions
Before you buy
Yes. Medicine is taught in English and all three entrance tests can be sat in English; the Biology and Chemistry tests may also be sat in Bulgarian.
It depends on the school and the cycle. Several universities (Varna, Zlatarov, and Pleven in recent cycles) run the exam fully online and remotely proctored; Sofia University's programme page does not say where its exam is sat. Check the current cycle's format for your target school; this guide notes it where published.
At some schools, yes. Medical University of Sofia's combined exam includes an English component, and Medical University of Varna runs a separate language-competency test alongside its two science papers. Medical University of Plovdiv and Prof. Dr. Assen Zlatarov University set an English diagnostic test only for candidates who don't already hold an accepted English certificate. Not every Bulgarian school tests English at all.
No separate national board exam. Bulgaria's state exam is built into the final year of the six-year degree itself, followed by free, indefinite registration in the National Register of the Bulgarian Medical Association (BLS).
Yes, it's the 2027 edition, built from the latest admission rules Prof. Dr. Assen Zlatarov University has published. Where a 2027 date or detail isn't published yet, confirm it with the university before you rely on it.
Yes. AZU-format practice sessions are available inside the simulator and align with the guide section by section.
